Here's some digital camera history: Digital cameras have been plagued with color cast problems (usually a brownish/orangish tint) since their inception. Camera manufacturers, being aware of this problem, have tried to solve it by including white balance features in their software. Seeing that these settings weren't as precise as professional photographers would like, they created the custom white balance feature. Using white or gray cards with the custom white balance feature helped. There were problems associated with that though. The cards had to be tilted in the light just right. The camera has to be a specific distance from the card. Shadows on the card produce inconsistent results. Inconsistencies in the printing of gray cards causes problems.
